For nearly thirty years, the Berlin Wall was the ultimate physical symbol of control; of order. By the time I visited Berlin in 2000, the wall had been dismantled for over a decade. Only small pieces remain now as a reminder of what the city once endured. Even the few chunks of wall that remain have chinks in their armor today.
